In ancient Roman mythology, the god of war Mars and Venus had an affair and gave birth to Cupid, the god of love. In order to protect his mother’s reputation, Cupid sent a bouquet of roses to the god of silence Harpocrates, asking him to keep a secret .
 
The Romans therefore regarded roses as a symbol of silence or keeping secrets. If you see roses painted on the table when you visit someone's home, it means that the things discussed on this table cannot be spread.
